InternFeel: Hello Dhruba, Pleasure to meet you! Please tell us about yourself. What makes you different?
Dhruba: I am Dhruba Ghosh from Amity School of Engineering and Technology, Noida, currently pursuing M.Tech in VLSI. I am too much motivated and hard-working. I am truly devoted to my research work along with that I love singing.
IF: Which internship you got the chance to take? What is it all about? Stipend, duration, place?
Dhruba: I am truly lucky as I got the chance to take Summer Research Fellowship Programme for PG students in IIT, Delhi in 2014. It is a fellowship programme and I got Rs. 3500 as a fellowship for my 7 weeks internship and IIT, Delhi also provides me free fooding and lodging in Himadri hostel for internship period.
IF: How you came to know about the internship? To what all sources you kept yourself connected?
Dhruba: I came to know about the internship from IIT, Delhi website.
IF: Tell us on the procedure to apply for the internship. Who all are eligible to apply for this internship?
Dhruba: IIT Delhi started giving forms for their summer research fellowship programme from April last week. The post-graduate students who scored 75% mark in their first semester examination are all eligible to apply for this fellowship but the selection of 20-22 students from all over India is solely dependent on merit, their academic profile and their recommendation from parent institute and obviously dependent on their project topic.
IF: Let’s talk about how competitive is the selection process.
What qualities of yours, you believe helped you in having an edge over the selection process? What key things you feel were looked for by the selectors?
Dhruba: The selection process is highly competitive. My motivation to research work, my good academic profile and the extreme urge of innovation are the things that helped me for this selection.
I think, the selectors are looking for some innovative young minds who have the capability to do some new work in the field of Electronics.
IF: About when you got the news for the selection? How was the celebration?
Dhruba: I got the news for the selection on 15th May, 2014 at 5 p.m. After seeing the mail of Vivek Raman, Deputy Registrar of IIT, Delhi. I was so much happy.
IF: What all preparations you did (academic/otherwise) after the results in view of the internship?
Dhruba: After consulting with my guide in IIT, Delhi, at first, I decided my project topic and started to learn the tool. As I was using first time the open source tool, NGSPICE, it was very hard for me but now I am quite familiar with the tool. I also read near about 100 papers on Radio Frequency Integrated circuit.
IF: So Dhruba, could you please highlight us with what work/research project you carried out during the internship period? It’s application in near future and your work in it?
Dhruba: I worked in the field of radio frequency integrated circuit. My major field is chip designing. I am from VLSI background and I think this is the most important field in electronics industry as any electronics equipment is standing on the base of circuit designing.
IF: What was the best thing about the work culture and the internship? What all things you liked there?
The best thing about the work culture in IIT is my guide is so much supportive and he never interfered in my work.
IF: What was the guidance provided by your guide? What all support you received from IIT Delhi’s administration.
Dhruba: The facilities like fooding, lodging etc. provided my IIT, Delhi administration is good.
My guide is so much supportive and helpful. Without him, I would have never been able to complete my project.
IF: Let’s now talk about some negatives.
What problems you or your friends faced, regards to the internship, which your juniors may be able to avoid?
Dhruba: The only negative is institute Wi-Fi is disconnected everyday fron 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. but it’s not a major issue. Apart from that, I don’t think there is any negative issue in IIT, Delhi regarding safety or accommodation.
IF: To which all people you would, like to thank in context of this internship?
Dhruba: I would like to give my deep sense of gratitude to my guide in IIT, Delhi and also to my guide in Amity University. Overall, I would like to thank my father and mother.
IF: How much difference this period of 2 months made in your intellectual capabilities and mind-set. In broad terms what are your gains from this?
Dhruba: These two months make a large difference in my mind-set. There I learnt to think beyond the theory of electronics written in book and also first time I came in touch of using UBUNTU.
IF: Advice for juniors? Which can help them in getting internships in their future college life and also advice for making the best out of it.
Dhruba: Study hard, learn to think beyond your text book, be motivated – You can achieve everything in your life.
IF: What are your future plans after this internship and how much impact this internship will have on it?
Dhruba: Now, I am planning for 6 months internship in abroad and also preparing for GRE. Actually, this 6 months internship is in my M. Tech course curriculum.
