Somya: Hi! My name is Somya Agrawal, currently pursuing B.tech. in chemical engineering from IIT (BHU), Varanasi. I’m interested in dancing, acting and reading novels. I am very passionate about everything I do, whether it is scholastic work or co-curricular activities.

IF: Which internship you got the chance to take? What is it all about? Stipend, duration, place?

Somya: I got the incredible chance of working on a project in IIT-Bombay. This summer research project was of 6 weeks in Powai, Mumbai. I did not receive any stipend.

IF: Tell us on the procedure to apply for the internship. Who all are eligible to apply for this
internship?

Somya: I got this internship by mailing to the professor directly. I expressed my desire to work under his guidance and attached my curriculum vitae (CV).

IF: Let’s talk about how competitive is the selection process. What qualities of yours, you believe helped you in having an edge over the selection process? What key things you feel were looked for by the selectors?

Somya: I think I got selected because of my keen desire to do research work. My academic record was also good. At that time, my department rank was 7 out of a class of 116 students. So, this might also be the factor that was considered.

IF: About when you got the news for the selection? How was the celebration?

Somya: Well, I was very happy and relieved when I received positive response from one professor after sending more than 100 mails to different institutions throughout the country. There was not much celebration though.

IF: So Somya, could you please highlight us with what work/research project you carried out during the internship period? It’s application in near future and your work in it?

Somya: Since I’m in chemical engineering, my project was based on heat transfer operations and its practical applications. I was assigned the task of predicting the refrigeration load of a warehouse/ cold-storage. I simulated the model on COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2. This work can be used in development of cold storages that require much lesser energy consumption.

IF: What was the best thing about the work culture and the internship? What all things you liked there?

Somya: The best thing about the work culture of IIT Bombay is the independence of doing research. Your ideas and inputs will be valued. Apart from that, the research labs are open for 24 hours if one wants to work.

IF: What was the guidance provided by your guide? What all support you received from IIT
Bombay’s administration.

Somya: My guide was very supportive throughout the internship. He used to discuss the progress of the project at lengths. I was given appropriate counsel wherever necessary. I was motivated so that I can give my best efforts.

IF: To which all people you would, like to thank in context of this internship?

Somya: First of all, I would like to express gratitude for my guide who gave me this wonderful opportunity. Next, I would like to thank my co-partner who worked with me in this project with full dedication. I am also grateful to my parents and family who supported me at every step.

IF: How much difference this period of 2 months made in your intellectual capabilities and

mindset. In broad terms what are your gains from this?

Somya: I learnt a lot from this internship regarding the scope and applicability of theoretical principles of chemical engineering. Apart from this, I got acquainted with the various career paths available after completing B.Tech. I think I have developed much more awareness about what I want to accomplish in my life. These 2 months boosted my morale and made me more confident about myself.

IF: Advice for juniors? Which can help them in getting internships in their future college life and  also advice for making the best out of it.

Somya: I think if you want to get a good internship, you must have a good CGPA (not necessarily exceptional). It is also advisable to do some projects in your own institution so that you are well versed with the expectations and challenges that can come during internships. Plus, it makes your CV venerable. After getting an internship, full commitment should be given to the work so that you make
the most out of it.

IF: What are your future plans after this internship and how much impact this internship will have
on it?

Somya: I will either do a job or appear in GRE after my under-graduation. I believe that this internship will help me a lot in both of them.

IF: Any views about this initiative of InternFeel, and how beneficial it would be?Any suggestions
for improvement?

Somya: I find InternFeel to be a virtuous platform of experience-sharing amongst students of various colleges. It is a tantalizing attempt for the benefit of youth who have a great amount of enthusiasm about internships.

IF: Somya, we are at the end of the interview. From the entire team of InternFeel, we thank you
for sharing your experiences with us, for everyone and we wish you best of luck for all your future
endeavors.

Somya: I am very grateful to InternFeel for giving me this chance. I would be very happy if anyone is benefited by my experience. Thank you so much.
