IF: Please tell us something about yourself. Where are you studying currently? What are your hobbies and interests?

Swayam Tibrewal (ST): Hello! I’m an electronics and communication engineer from VIT University, Vellore. I completed my B.Tech in May 2016. An Inquisitive learner. High S.Q, low E.Q and a well-balanced I.Q. Friendly, joyful and mischievous are the adjectives my friends would use to describe me. “Impulsive” is the word that fits. I love to play sports. Always ready to play Cricket, Badminton, TT, Chess or Carrom.

Currently, I am preparing for CAT and would be joining Mu Sigma as a Data Scientist in August 2016.

IF: Which internship did you get the chance to take? What was it all about? Please tell us about stipend, duration and place of internship?

ST: I got an internship at IIM Ahmedabad in the Information Management domain last winter. I worked on a case study titled “Evaluation of resource discovery protocols in mobile ad-hoc file sharing networks”.

Professors in IIM Ahmedabad can only provide stipend to 2 interns under their supervision. Seeing my interest towards this project, my guide gave me an opportunity to work with her though she had already promised two other interns. I didn’t receive a stipend there but the experience was worth the time and the money. I bagged an internship certificate and a promise of letter of recommendation when in need.

Duration depends upon the professor, which can vary from one month to four months. Generally, an internship for two months is preferred.

If you’re lucky enough to get an on-campus internship, you’d get the chance to stay near IIM Ahmedabad and work inside the premises.

JpegIF: How did you come to know about the internship? What were the various sources you kept yourself connected with?

ST: I am a constant online opportunity seeker. Through Quora and LinkedIn, I got to know that IIM Ahmedabad and other B-schools offer internship to students across the globe. I didn’t contact any source for helping me get this internship. I had to work on my own constantly to avail this opportunity. I got internship calls from four professors there, three of them in summer 2015. But I chose not to go for an on-campus internship then as I was selected as an intern at IISc Bangalore during the same time. I did an off-campus internship in that summer.

IF: Can you tell us about the procedure, how to apply for the internship? What are the eligibility criteria to apply for this internship?

ST: The procedure to apply for this internship is simple yet one must be smart enough to get a reply from the professors. I have listed down the procedure to apply below:

  • First of all, you need to find your prime area of interest in any one of the domains B-schools offer.
  • You should gain knowledge and do some prior work related to your area of interest.
  • You should develop your curriculum vitae (CV) that showcases your interest and goals in life.
  • Prepare a cover letter that you’re going to mail to the professors. Keep in mind, a professor at IIM Ahmedabad will receive numerous mails; therefore your mail should interest them. Keep it short and precise.
  • Don’t have the same cover letter for all the professors. Research on the professors based on their interest areas. Modify your cover letter accordingly and send them a mail only if your interest clashes. Else it will be a complete waste of time and energy.
  • Include details in your mail. Availability, accommodation and stipend details should be mentioned.
  • Lastly, have an email signature. It looks professional.

People who are interested in any of the domains that B-Schools offer and have done some work regarding the same are eligible to apply for the internship.

IF: How competitive the selection process is in nature? What qualities of yours, you believe have helped you in having an edge in the selection process? What key things you feel were looked for by the selectors?

ST: The competition for internship there is as tough as one could expect. Professors receive thousands of email and select a few candidates based on their skills that will contribute towards the research work.

I had worked on Mobile Adhoc networks in my third year of engineering. Most of my projects were related to the same topic. Also, Networking is one of my prime areas of interest. I had done a course on Network Management from Nettech which helped me brush up my networking skills. I was good in academics with a CGPA of 9.5. I was the board member of Entrepreneurship Cell and also the President (Marketing) of Rowing Canyon of my college which gave me an invaluable experience. Apart from that, I had the experience of publishing two technical and four management papers in reputed journals and conferences. All these might have contributed to my selection process.

Professors look out for those who can contribute in a positive way towards their research work/project. The way one presents his/her CV is also a deciding factor.

IF: Could you please highlight the work/research project you carried out during the internship period? Its application in the near future and your work in it?

ST: I worked on a case study titled “Evaluation of resource discovery protocols in mobile ad-hoc file sharing networks” in which-

  • I developed a scalable broadcasting algorithm for P2P sharing of multimedia files on mobile devices using Wi-Fi connection.
  • Built different scenarios for testing the protocol and analyzed the results to come up with the practicality of its implementation in a small area.
  • And the implementation was done using Omnet++ ‘s INET Framework, an Open Source Network Simulation Tool.

JpegIF: How much difference this internship period make in your intellectual capabilities and mindset? In broader terms, what are your gains and takeaways?

ST:  It is my Dream to study here as a PGP student. It’s a completely different atmosphere when one gets into the campus. The freedom, the ambiance. It’s euphoric. A campus where students are so dedicated towards their career trying to get better every day. The popular tagline ‘IIM A ka tempo high hai, xyz ki leli zig-zag- zoo!’ highlights the zeal and enthusiasm of the students on campus.

In my short stay for two months, since I got the chance to attend PGP classes, I learnt what MBA is all about. Many students get into a B-school without even knowing what they are going to do there. I got a clear perspective of the same. In the project I worked upon, it was an enlightening experience to know the technical aspects that I was unaware of. I also visited the CIIE- Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship which fosters young minds to pursue their startup ideas and turn them into valuable products. Innovation is the key ingredient that they live upon. I got a feel of the whole startup arena. Even as interns, there were lots of opportunities given to us. We got the chance to attend PGP lectures, seminars by dignitaries and also be a part in organizing their cultural fest. I have become a better individual intellectually after my stay there. The campus has a different world altogether.

IF: What are your future plans after this internship and how much impact this internship will have on it?

ST: I wish to join IIM Ahmedabad as a PGP student. I am preparing myself for the same. I hope this internship helps me during my interview if I get a call for the same. It’s definitely an add-on to my career graph.

We’d like to wish Swayam all the very best for his future endeavors!
