In detail
InterFeel (IF): Please tell us something about yourself. Where are you studying currently? What are your hobbies and interests?
Nidhi Kumari (NK): Hi my name is Nidhi Kumari, I am pursuing my 5th year in chemical engineering at IIT Roorkee. My hobbies include athletics, playing tennis, swimming, and singing. I have won more than 50 medals in athletics. I have been awarded Best Athlete thrice – twice in IIT Roorkee Athletics meet, and once in Sangram’15, a sports fest of IIT Roorkee, wherein around 21 colleges participated.
IF: Tell us something about your internship including stipend, duration, and place?
ND: I was interning with Winwincab, Gurgaon and duration are 6-8 weeks from 9th-17th may. Winwincab is a cab company which provides cab facility to companies, employees, workers, etc. Basically provides pick and drop facility from home to office and vice versa in entire NCR region. But I was there only for a few days and does the remaining work from home. As for how I found about this internship, I used to check my campus notice board. As I am an IDD student, there are very few companies open for us. So when I saw this company is open for chemical IDD, I applied as I wanted to gain some marketing knowledge.
Duration of the internship – 6-8 weeks
Stipend – between INR 3,000 – 5,000
IF: Let’s talk about how competitive the selection process was. Which qualities helped you to have edge in the selection process? According to you, what were the key things that selectors were looking for?
ND: It was telephonic interview. I was straight forward with them about the fact that I have no knowledge about marketing and operations. But I was keen on learning and hence seeking an internship with them. Further, they just asked me few question, not much. After which I got an email regarding confirmation of internship. I don’t believe it was very competitive.
IF: Could you please highlight the work you carried out during your internship period?
ND: Basically we have to publicize the company so that more customers would approach it. My work was mainly mailing, calling and fixing meeting. Firstly we had to mail the company about the facilities we provide and after getting response from them we tell them more about our services. Sometimes we directly call the companies and told them we belong to this group/company at this post and request them to connect us to a particular person.
IF: Can you talk about any negative experiences?
ND: Yes. The main thing was I had to travel a lot to reach to office. It took me more than an hour to reach office by metro. Also, the work was monotonous. I thought I would learn something new and more, but it was not as per my expectations. Also, the stipend was less. Another concern was that I was the only girl there. In starting, 3 girls were selected but other two did not join due to personal reasons.
IF: How do you think this internship has helped you grow? In other words, what are your key takeaways from the internship?
ND: Well, as I said it was not per my expectations, but I still learnt a lot. Now I know how to talk to a company, how to approach them and also my convincing ability has grown a little more. I also know how one could establish their own startup.
IF: Lastly, do you have any words of advice or caution for students aspiring for this internship and reading this piece?
ND: Yes. One should choose their internship according to their interest. If he/she is in 1st or 2nd year, he/she can explore so much and identify the field in which he/she is good. I was a little late in understanding that area wherein my interests lay for a future job. As for advice I just want to say don’t waste your holidays having only fun. It’s good to explore your interest a little more and make your 3rd/ 4th year internship count. This surely helps in your future placement interviews and according to me this will increase the chances of selection!
We’d like to thank Nidhi for taking the time out and giving such detailed and insightful responses!
