You would have heard or read or seen the above many times. Question is, what if you don’t have a strong resume?

How often you have faced this situation: You try to make a resume and start thinking of what to write next, the moment you make the header for “Projects” or “Software Skills” or “Extra-curricular activities” ?
Don’t worry this happens with many people. There are many ways to solve this problem. One solution which has worked with many is “Fake Resume” Technique. Now, before jumping to any conclusion, read on – carefully!

Here is how the technique works –

You have to make a 1 page resume (strictly) with 12 point font for text and 14 point font for headings. No photo needed. No extra spaces. Use the following guidelines.

1. Make a resume for “Future-You”.
Imagine that you have time traveled and moved to point of time just before summer vacation and believe that you have got selected for, at your dream internship. Now, think what all skills you might have developed and projects and extra curricular activities you would have done, that got you selected. Add all those in your resume.

2. Don’t do it just for the sake of doing!
Do the above step with full seriousness. Make the resume, remove all sort of typos and ask yourself, “If I were the person responsible for selecting a person for this internship, will I select “THIS” person?? If the answer is “No”, make it more powerful by adding more points. If the answer is “Yes”, take a print out.

3. Do Justice to yourself. Don’t joke with yourself.
While doing the above, be practical and don’t add something jokingly. “I have won a noble prize in physics”, “I have visited to moon”, “I have discovered a new element, I have been part of Indian national cricket team”, “I have CGPA of 10.0” — Keep these things to fantasize or work on later. 😉

Once you have taken the print out, make sure you see it as the first thing in morning. Work hard to make your Fake Resume your true resume! Find out what you can do every week and every day, to make small part of your resume come true. After few weeks of working on it (after making the resume!), you will soon realise if you are on right track or not.

Now if you truly become confident that, you can make your fake resume your true resume, then and only then, you should use it for applying in internships! For example, if you have mentioned as having know-how in a particular software, in your fake resume, and you believe you can learn it before the next summers (when your internship might begin), you can mention it in resume and use it for applying to internship programs!

The technique works if you are honest with yourself, are ready to make some commitments and come out of your comfort zone or even better – make another zone your comfort zone.
