Deepa Ram: Hi! I am doing my B.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) final year from MNIT Jaipur. I am doing well in academics along with it I am also active in co-curricular activities. My hobbies to read novels and internet surfing. Huhh difficult question… But I think my grabbing power of things makes me different from others.
IF: Which internship you got the chance to take? What is it all about? Stipend, duration, place?
Deepa Ram: I was selected to take internship at TU Freiberg, Saxony, Germany under DAAD WISE program. My Internship was related to Granular Flow Modelling. Stipend was airfare and 650 euro per month plus insurance.
IF: How you came to know about the internship? To what all sources you kept yourself connected?
Deepa Ram: I come to know through the seniors and online sites like InternFeel, Internshala. I kept connected myself through internet and being in contact with seniors.
IF: Tell us on the procedure to apply for the internship. Who all are eligible to apply for this internship?
Deepa Ram: DAAD invites application in the month of August. Before applying for the scholarship you need to have a invitation letter from the German professor ( a tedious job). This scholarship is availed to students of some selected college only. And minimum eligibility criteria is CGPA 8.5 or equivalent percentage.
IF: Let’s talk about how competitive is the selection process.
What qualities of yours, you believe helped you in having an edge over the selection process? What key things you feel were looked for by the selectors?
Deepa Ram: The selection process for the DAAD internships is very competitive and only about 150-160 scholarships are given out every year. They look for a sound academic performance and relevance of your project with your future goals. I believe that my good academic performance combined(CGPA 9.5) with a few good projects helped in my selection. Also, knowledge of softwares like Altair Hyperworks and Autodesk Inventor was an added advantage.
IF: About when you got the news for the selection? How was the celebration?
Deepa Ram: I got the good news in last week of Jan 2014, It came to me through mail. For next few seconds, I could not believe what just happened. Since it was going to be first time getting in a foreign country, everyone in my home got surprised to get the news. I had an awesome celebration that time with my friends.
IF: What all preparations you did (academic/otherwise) after the results in view of the internship?
Deepa Ram: After the results, I started searching for accommodations in Freiberg. I applied for visa and made arrangement for travelling. Apart from this I read some research paper based on my projects. That’s all……
IF: So Deepa Ram, could you please highlight us with what work/research project you carried out during the internship period? It’s application in near future and your work in it?
Deepa Ram: I worked in Institute of Mechanics and Fluid Dynamics, my work was to model a Granular flow using YADE (Yet Another Dynamic Engine). Basically this type of modelling is used for flow of granular materials like sand flow, metal powder flow etc. I have completed 4-5 small projects of modelling.
IF:What was the best thing about the work culture and the internship? What all things you liked there?
Deepa Ram: The thing which I like most about German work culture is that during working time they just focus on work and work very hard, but during party time they enjoy a lot.And I also like the way Germans celebrated their B’day and other celebrations….And specially I like helping nature of German people.
IF: Were there any special events during the internships?
Deepa Ram: There happens many things during internship like Europe visit, Berlin Meet and many more.
IF: What was the guidance provided by your guide? What all support you received from TU Freiberg’s administration.
Deepa Ram: My guide provided me all support necessary to carry out my projects. He helped me at every step of my project. TU Freiberg’s administration is very helpful, specially for international students. They allot a mentor which takes care of int’l student during initial days. And even if we have any problem they are always there.
IF: Let’s now talk about some negatives.
What problems you or your friends faced, regards to the internship, which your juniors may be able to avoid?
Deepa Ram: The biggest problem which I find is vegetarian food and a little bit of language problem. To avoid from food problem specially vegetarian people, they should carry maximum food they can carry. And should learn cooking. And before departure they should have some sort of introduction to German culture and basics about German Language.
